Emsella After Prostatectomy and Prostate Surgery
If you have had a prostatectomy or prostate surgery, you’re not alone. More than 190,000 men in the US are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. It’s the second most common cancer in men after skin cancer. And each year, over 90,000 men choose a prostatectomy as part of their treatment plan. While it’s effective, it can come with side effects.
Up to 40% of men experience some level of urinary leakage or incontinence, and around 50% may deal with erectile dysfunction after surgery. Most men regain bladder control and sexual function within a year of surgery; but for 10% of them, this is not the case. They continue to continue to suffer with the symptoms of a weakened pelvic floor long after their surgery.
At StayDry Med Centers, we help men regain their pelvic floor strength after a prostatectomy with the Emsella Chair. Emsella is a non-invasive treatment that helps strengthen the pelvic floor muscle, improve bladder control and sexual function without surgery or medication. With six locations in North Carolina and Florida, StayDry Med Centers is the largest provider of Emsella treatments in the country.
The Emsella Chair (or Kegel Chair) is an FDA-Cleared, non-invasive medical device that strengthens the muscles of the pelvic floor. It uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to stimulate and contract your pelvic floor muscles simulating 11,200 Kegel Exercises in just 30 minutes.
Urologists agree that strengthening the pelvic floor before and after a prostatectomy or prostate surgery is crucial for improving bladder control and sexual function.
They recommend a number of pelvic floor programs including: Kegel exercises (lots and lots of them), biofeedback therapy, electrical stimulation, pelvic floor physical therapy, yoga, diet and hydration, and lifestyle changes. Now many Urologists recommend the Emsella Chair to compliment or accelerate the pelvic floor recovery.
How Emsella Strengthens the Pelvic Floor
Dr. Joseph Berenholz is a board certified gynecologist and surgeon in Farmington Hills, Michigan who was involved with many of the original clinical trials of the Emsella Chair. He has published multiple papers on the effect of HIFEM technology for the treatment of urinary incontinence.
1. Improved Bladder Control
One of the most common issues after prostate surgery is urinary leakage or incontinence. Emsella treatments specifically target the pelvic floor muscles, helping men regain bladder control and reduce embarrassing leaks.
Improved bladder control means fewer pads or diapers (if any), longer periods between bathroom breaks, and fewer trips to the bathroom at night.
2. Kegels, Kegels, and More Kegels
Urologists and Pelvic Floor Therapists all recommend Kegel exercises as the best and most important way to regain pelvic floor strength after a prostatectomy or prostate surgery. And we agree! Kegels are your friend and Kegels are essential for post-surgical recovery.
The Emsella Chair does not replace Kegels. The Emsella Chair compliments Kegel exercises and jump starts your pelvic recovery. The Emsella Chair uses highly intensive focused electromagnetic energy to contract and stimulate the muscles of the pelvic floor which simulates 11,200 Kegel exercises in 30 minutes. That’s why it’s often called “The Kegel Chair.”
During the course of your treatment, your Emsella technician will reinforce the importance of doing your Kegels several times a day and provide tips and strategies that will help further strengthen your core and pelvic floor and teach your bladder to hold more urine.
3. Non-Invasive, Non-Surgical and Painless
No one wants more surgery or recovery time. Emsella is completely non-invasive, and the process is pain-free. You simply sit on the chair for 30 minutes while the HIFEM technology does the work, delivering thousands of contractions to your pelvic muscles.
4. Quick and Convenient
Each session is only 30 minutes long, making it easy to fit into your schedule. Whether you come in during a lunch break or after work, you’ll be back on your feet right away—no downtime required.
5. Strengthened Pelvic Floor Muscles
A prostatectomy or other prostate surgery or procedure is a traumatic event for the pelvic floor. Emsella strengthens these muscles, providing long-term support for your pelvic health. Stronger pelvic muscles can prevent future issues.
6. Faster Recovery After Surgery
While traditional Kegel exercises take time and effort to show results, Emsella treatments can speed up your recovery process. Many men notice improvements after just a few sessions, helping them get back to their normal routines faster.
7. Sexual Wellness and Confidence
In addition to bladder control, a stronger pelvic floor can help improve sexual function. By strengthening these muscles and improving blood flow to the pelvic areas, Emsella may help reduce erectile dysfunction, giving many men more confidence in their intimate relationships post-surgery.
8. No Drugs
Emsella doesn’t require any medications, hormones, or invasive procedures. This is ideal for people who prefer to avoid the potential side effects and long-term use of drugs. It’s a natural way to strengthen the body’s muscles and improve function without relying on prescriptions.
9. Recommended by Urologists and Health Experts
The Emsella Chair is an FDA-cleared medical device that has been clinically proven to strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, reduce bladder leaks, incontinence and improve confidence and quality of life. Urologists and other healthcare providers are increasingly recommending Emsella treatments as part of post-prostatectomy recovery plans. It’s a safe, effective way to address common issues like incontinence and erectile dysfunction without invasive procedures.
1. How soon after my prostatectomy can I treat on the Emsella Chair?
Your pelvic floor and body needs time to heal after surgery. We recommend waiting 2 – 3 months after surgery to begin Emsella Treatments.
2. How many Emsella treatments will I need?
Age, weight, physical condition, and life style affect patients in different ways. The manufacturer of the Emsella device recommends six treatments, twice a week for three week for patients with mild to moderate incontinence. However, in our experience, treating men who are still leaking more than one year after their prostatectomy should treat at least eight times followed by a follow up treatment 30 days after their last treatment.
3. Is Emsella covered by Insurance?
Unfortunately, Emsella Treatments are not covered by Insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. However, StayDry Med Centers does offer Medical Referral Pricing when a patient provides a signed Medical Referral Form from their doctor or health care provider. StayDry Med Centers also provides discounts to active and retired Military and their families.
4. How much do Emsella Treatments cost?
At most treatment centers, Emsella Treatments can cost as much as $300 per treatment. However, StayDry Med Centers is the largest provider of Emsella Treatments in the country. All of our six offices have multiple Emsella Chairs, each in their own private treatment room. With our high volume of patients, our treatment packages are priced significantly lower than the national average. Additionally, we offer Medical Referral Pricing when referred by your physician or healthcare provider. We also offer discounts for active and retired Military and their families.
5. Why should I treat with StayDry Med Centers instead of another provider?
Here are testimonial videos of male patients who have treated with Emsella after their prostatectomy or prostate surgery. These are from real patients from around the country who have seen an improvement in their symptoms since treating on the Emsella Chair.
